To teacher-librarians, there is nothing quite like the feel, the smell, the promise of a new book. It sits nearly in hand, just begging to be opened and read, and the anticipation or doing so is a significant part of the joy of reading it. Many children, however, do not have the opportunity to experience this sensation, because visiting a bookstore is as unlikely to them as visiting another country. And yet, it is within our power to offer every child in our school the chance to hold a brand new book and to experience that same special feeling. We can bring the bookstore to the child by holding a book fair. Although such an event adds to our workload, the smiles on the children's faces--as they Feel what we are so familiar with--are worth the effort.
